Consumers are no longer limited to refrigerators with freezers located at the top. Bottom freezer fridge appliances are now rising in popularity due to their convenience and energy efficiency. There are several styles of bottom freezer refrigerators such as the french door model which has double french doors in the refrigerator portion, and they are also made in the traditional single door model. The refrigerator portion is located on top and the freezer portion is located underneath it closest to the floor. The traditional french door freezer and refrigerator can be tight on space because the shelves are too narrow to store large trays and tupperware. The bottom freezer refrigerator with the french door refrigerator portion still has the french door feature for the refrigerator and also allows large trays of food to be stored in the bottom freezer portion.
Though bottom freezer refrigerators used to only open with a swing open door, they are now being manufactured to open like a drawer. The style of freezer which opens like a drawer saves space because the door needs less space to open than swing door freezers. Swing door freezers can also be harder to look into because the food is placed on shelves which would require someone to stoop down to look into it. Drawer style bottom freezers store frozen food in two separate wire baskets. The lower level basket pulls out with the freezer drawer, and the upper level basket also stores food and can be pulled out or pushed back in so that both baskets of food can be visible from above without searching through the freezer or moving food items. It is also easier to view the freezer items because the drawer model freezer can be looked into from above without having to bend down and look inside the freezer.
Bottom freezers are energy efficient because the freezers are located on the bottom of the refrigerator. The refrigerator can be kept cool in part by the freezer which is located underneath it. Therefore the refrigerator requires less energy to keep cool. These types of refrigerators can cost more than top freezer refrigerators upfront when they are purchased new. However, the costs of keeping the refrigerator running are typically less than top freezer refrigerators because they are energy efficient. The more expensive upfront cost of a bottom freezer refrigerator will eventually even out with the reduced energy bill.
